Filter Sizing & Configuration Guide
Choosing and ordering the right air filters requires more than just knowing the type you need — size, rating, and configuration all play a crucial role. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to ensure you get the correct filter the first time.
Correct Filter Sizing
Accurate measurements are essential to guarantee your filter will fit properly and perform at its best.
When requesting a quote or placing an order, always provide the exact length, width, and thickness of the filter.
Exact Size vs. Nominal Size
- Exact Size: The physical dimensions of the filter itself, measured directly (length × width × depth).
- Nominal Size: The industry-standard label based on the housing size, not the filter. The filter itself is typically a fraction smaller than the nominal dimension.
For most standard sizes, the nominal dimension listed on the filter frame is sufficient. However, for 5-inch filters and custom sizes, exact measurements are required.
Custom Filters
At Modern Air Filtration, custom-sized filters are one of our specialties. We pride ourselves on producing made-to-order filters without unnecessary delays.
When requesting a custom filter:
- Measure the exact dimensions (length, width, depth).
- Avoid relying solely on the labelled size, as it may differ from the actual measurements.
Pleated & Throwaway Filters
- Our facility can fabricate pleated and throwaway filters to virtually any size.
- For filters larger than 30 inches on one side, we manufacture a two-piece filter, bonding frames securely with specialized adhesives.
High-Efficiency Filters
We also customize pocket filters, rigid cells, mini-pleats, and other high-performance filters.
- When ordering, please specify the efficiency level (MERV rating) and whether the filter requires one, two, or no headers.
- Keep in mind that HEPA or high-efficiency custom filters often have longer lead times, so advance ordering is recommended.
